Effective Poker Strategies

Because poker is the most popular card game, and one of the most lucrative as well, poker fans continue to look for a fail-safe poker strategy. But there's no such thing as a magic formula that can turn you into a successful poker player overnight. Poker is a multi-faceted game and you can't find a strategy that covers each and every aspect of the game.

Poker players are generally categorized as either aggressive or passive. Each style of play has its own advantages and disadvantages. In some situations, an aggressive approach to the game will clear the road to victory. The same goes for the passive playing style. The fact is that the successful poker player rarely sticks to a single playing style for very long, shifting between playing styles to match the urgency of the situation.

To illustrate this fact, just watch a poker tournament on TV. You'll often see overconfident players fold cards when the situations warrants and the reserved player suddenly going all-in. It's all a matter of adapting yourself to the situation at hand. If you remain in an aggressive or passive mode for a long time, your opponents will be able to analyze your play and pick you apart later on.

You should also realize that not all hands you get can carry you to the pot. You have to be realistic about the strength of the hands you are holding. If you are unlucky enough to get a hopeless hand, you should not be ashamed of folding. That is, if you are not trying to pull off a bluff.

Knowing when to fold and when to call is a skill you have to master to perfection. Folding your cards when the situation warrants is not an act of cowardice, but a wise move that will redound to your benefit later on. Don't overplay your hands or else you will find yourself out of the game or tournament earlier than expected.

Running away from the flop doesn't mean that you should play only the strongest hands. Do your best to maximize the strength of your good hands and try to lure as much chips as possible into the pot. Check, call or raise wisely to keep your opponents in the pot but be confident that your hand can beat theirs. You can also use your bluffing skills to fool your opponents into surrendering the pot but don't overdo it.

Successful poker players are unpredictable players, inasmuch as they shift quickly between different playing styles to avoid leaving clues about their plays. You, too, can apply these techniques to prevent your opponents from outwitting you so that you can dominate them at the poker tables.
